5th Grade presentations, "Our Location in Objects"

What: Students create a collaborative presentation of their location for students from other schools (around the world, potentially)

Materials:
  • KidBlog accounts
  • Google account
  • An object that represents their state
  • Video app
Time: 2-3 weeks
Challenges
  • Students will need to bring in an object from home or identify an item in the classroom that represents their location.
  • Students will need to do some research on their object so that the video is not just a one-line clue.
Tips
  • Students should not duplicate objects.
  • If students have not brought in an object, they can create a screencast of a picture that represents the locations. Students narrate what is significant about the image.
  • If students are using PhotoBooth to film, their video will be backwards so it will need to be flipped in iMovie if they have written text. Still images can be autoflipped in PhotoBooth in the Edit menu.
  • Post videos to an unlisted youtube account so you can insert them into a presentation.
  • Students will collaborate on a shared presentation so set up ground rules for shared space.
  • Prepare the slideshow in advance with each students' own slide with their video inserted if they do not have access to youtube uploads.
  • Post the directions in KidBlog as a post--I posted them as the slideshow seen below--so all students can rewatch the directions as needed.
Narrative:
The 5th grade teachers and I wanted to do a follow-up to the Mystery Skype by having the students share their location with their "video Mystery Skype pals." We discussed having students describe an object that represented our country or state or both for international students.
